When Wirral Animal Sanctuary was founded in November 2015, the original and main aim was to fundraise for a premises on the Wirral to help animals in need. Aspiring to something like Freshfields in Liverpool, a safe haven for all "unwanted" pets, possibly some farm animals and wildlife too.
Unfortunately, as soon as Wirral Animal Sanctuary was founded, we became insanely busy. We were thrown into fostering, specifically fostering small animals and reptiles as many other rescues were unable to help. Then, we opened The Hog Centre due to a massive need as there were no other hedgehog rescues on the WIrral at that time. We have treated hundreds of hedgehogs, and even expanded our Hog Centre to Larton Liveries in July 2018 due to outgrowing our original space. The Hog Centre has taken most of our time and rescources over the last two years and we are so happy to have been able to release hundreds of happy and healthy hedgehogs back into the wild.
Now The Hog Centre is settled, we have approved RSPCA status and we have incredible staff and volunteers to manage it, it's time to re-focus on our original aim.
The Dream is to have a fully functional animal rescue in our local area, with a large capacity for cats. We are currently turning away sometimes 4 or 5 cats a day simply due to having no where to keep them safe, and this really breaks our hearts. We find that cats is where the Wirral is most lacking in space, with the wonderful Wirral RSPCA constantly at capacity, and the other rescues struggling with foster homes. The cattery of our dreams will have isolation areas, Mum and baby units, and beatiful cattery pens with outdoor spaces for sun bathing.
We also hope to have space for a kennel block, and outdoor exercise areas. Something we are passionate about is that the dogs in our care will have a lot of rehabilitation work carried out before rehoming. We hear so many stories (and have some ourselves) of rescue dogs being adopted sadly so affected by their past that they have so many issues, and make life incredibly difficult for their new owners, sometimes ending up back in rescue. Working with our friends at Paws In Nature, the dogs in our care with have full assessments, rehabilitation work where required, and follow up help offered to new owners.
We are always innundated with rodents and reptiles, and heve rehomed bearded dragons, snakes, degus, rabbits, hamsters, rats, mice, and even a tarantula in the past. Our dream new premises will have a building specifically for these animals that are often seen as easily disposed of. They will be cared for by specially trained staff and given all the love and attention in the world until their forever home finds them.
The icing on the cake would be to also have space for some farm animals, and perhaps a wildlife unit to help wild birds, foxes, etc. We can dream can't we?
We are under no illusions that our dream will take many years of fundraising and hard work to acheive, but we have to start somewhere. Along side this fundraising platform, we will also be applying for grants from various businesses and trusts towards our premises. We will be holding fundraising events specifically for our premises. We will soon have wishing wells in our shops and The Hog Centre for loose change to be donated to Our Dream, it all adds up! We hope that our wonderful supporters will consider holding events, sponsored challenges, and many other ideas are in the pipeline.
Please consider donating, even a £1 is a huge help, we need a lot of them to get where we need to be but we are ambitious and determined enough to do it. Please share. Thank you so much.
